Democrat leaders once again prove their uselessness
It is now official. Leading Democrats in Washington have reached the summit of stupidity, in their effort to appear tough, hard-hitting and no-nonsense.
Yesterday, in the ultimate act of pandering during an election year, the House of Representatives passed a bill that allows the Justice Department to sue OPEC members who limit oil supplies and work together to set crude prices.
This means the democrat leaders in the House are idiotic enough and arrogant enough to think that oil producers such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela will be pressured into following United States antitrust laws that U.S. companies are subject to.
However, this bill does not in any way address the repercussions that will rain down on the head of consumers, at the pump. It does not produce new fuel sources or cheaper prices at the pump. It does not address the fact that if the Justice Department sued and won, and OPEC played nice and paid, that the consumer will pay that price at the pump – further increasing the cost per gallon of gas.
This bill also fails to address and correct bad laws, passed by democrats, that increase the cost of crude – such as their refusal to permit drilling in oil rich places such as ANWR and off the coast of certain coastal states, building refineries and nuclear power plants. Democrats have forced us into dependency on foreign oil and now complain that prices are too high.
This bill speaks of price manipulation, but it fails to address their own overspending of our tax dollars, which have greatly contributed to the pain felt at the pumps and elsewhere.
Fortunately President Bush will be vetoing this asinine piece of legislation should it pass the Senate.
