Tim Russert: A legacy for all
BY VIRGINIA H. SHANAHAN
As I woke this morning it dawned on me that Tim Russert is gone. Every Sunday morning he was in my living room. During campaign debates I looked forward to his moderation. He was a staple in my home.
Tim Russert was a democrat, but one would hardly be able to pick that up from his interviews, questions and reports. Though he never got riled, lost his temper, or raised his voice on television, he asked the questions many never dared. He was truly hard hitting and always, always prepared. When you sat down with Tim Russert you knew you would be explaining yourself, despite your side of the political isle.
What most impressed me about Tim Russert – and what separates him from most of todays self-professed journalists and reporters – is that he was not only fair, but he kept his own political opinions out of the arena. His job was to dig and report in a fair and consistent manner. He not only did this, but he did this well.
Tim Russerts death has not only left a big hole in the world of politics and television enjoyment, but it has left a gaping abyss in the world of reporting.
It is difficult for me to wrap my mind around the fact that he will no longer be visiting my home. Dead at the young age of 58. Cause? An enlarged heart, with arterial blockage. My heart aches for his wife, son, father and sister.
Tim Russert will be missed. May his legacy serve as a guide for all those entering into the world of mass media, journalism and politics. Whomever is chosen to take his seat behind the desk of Meet the Press has some mighty large shoes to fill. For the life of me I can think of no one worthy.
