Barack Obama played the “me too” game during the Friday debates on September 26 after Senator John McCain mentioned that he was wearing a bracelet with the name of Cpl. Matthew Stanley, a resident of New Hampshire and a soldier that lost his life in Iraq in 2006. Obama said that he too had a bracelet. After fumbling and straining to remember the name, he revealed that his had the name of Sergeant Ryan David Jopek of Merrill, Wisconsin.

Shockingly, however, Madison resident Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan Jopek, the young soldier who tragically lost his life to a roadside bomb in 2006, recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his family had asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his son’s name on it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the family.

Actually…the mother did give him the bracelet and she seems to want him to wear it. http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/bracelet-wars.html

Mother and father are divorced, her wishes shouldn’t be less important than his.

The soldier’s mother says she is delighted and honored that Obama talked about the bracelet.

“Tracy Jopek of Merrill told The Associated Press on Sunday she was honored that Obama remembered Sgt. Ryan David Jopek, who was killed in 2006 by a roadside bomb.

Jopek criticized Internet reports suggesting Obama, D-Ill., exploited her son for political purposes.”

I think this is ridiculous on both of their parts. Yes, it’s great to bring a “personal touch” to the campaign. But really, is it possible for either politician to personally acknowledge the contributions of each and every member of our services who has given or risked their life for our country? Not by wearing bracelets.

Honestly, though, I’m more sickened by McCain politicizing this than by Obama. Obama has something to prove in this department. McCain is a veteran himself, and was a POW. He should wear the bracelet if he feels compelled to, but his OWN experiences should be enough for the public, political arena.
