Russia-Venezuela Military Exercises In Caribbean Sea
For the first time since the end of the cold war the Russian Navy has a fleet in Venezuela. Russia and Venezuela began joint military exercisers in the Caribbean Sea, close to U.S. waters.
Russian Vice-Admiral Vladimir Korolev, Deputy Commander of the Northern Fleet, said,
“This series of exercises aims to evaluate the skills and capabilities of the fleets of both nations to fight against terrorism and drug-trafficking.”
Could anyone possibly buy this story?
The BBC is reporting that US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is not concerned.
“A few Russian ships [are] not going to change the balance of power.”
Call me silly but this is just the beginning of things to come that does not bode well for the United States. Let us hope that the incoming Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, will see the importance of such a move; especially in light of Russia’s overly aggressive behavior these past few months and their recent history of arms sales to Venezuela.
